When a cine lens set costs less than two primes

Two Cooke S4/i primes listed in London today cost £370 a day. All six cost £375. Five pounds more buys you four more lenses, and most people booking a two-lens day never check.

That is not a quirk of one listing. Every cine lens family on Picturental that offers both singles and a set is priced the same way, and in each case the point where the set wins comes far earlier than people expect. It is usually three lenses. Sometimes it is two.

This guide puts the actual numbers against it, using day rates listed in London at the time of writing, and then shows what the fees do to the total once you book real dates.

The break-even is three lenses, not five

Here is what a set costs per lens against the cheapest single in the same family:

• Zeiss CP.2 — singles at £72, the 5-Way Set at £150. That is £30 a lens. Three singles (£216) already cost more than all five.
• SIGMA FF Cine — singles at £86, the 5-Way Set at £275. £55 a lens. Break-even at four.
• ARRI/Zeiss Ultra Prime — 100mm at £136, 135mm at £150, the 5-Way Set at £300. £60 a lens. Those two singles alone come to £286.
• Cooke S4/i — 40mm and 65mm at £185 each, 135mm at £205, the 6-Way Set at £375. £62.50 a lens.
• Zeiss Supreme Prime — most singles at £185, the 5-Way Set at £680. £136 a lens. Break-even at four.

Read the Ultra Prime line again. A 100mm and a 135mm cost £286. The full five-lens set costs £300. You are fourteen pounds from a complete set.

The pattern holds across every family in the catalogue: a set is priced at roughly two to four times a single prime, and then hands you five or six lenses. Nobody publishes this because the comparison only exists if you line the listings up next to each other.

Anamorphic is where the gap is widest

Two lenses is the whole break-even on anamorphic glass.

An Atlas Orion 25mm T2 is £150 a day on its own. Orion Set 'A' and Set 'B' are £235 each. Book two Orion primes separately and you have spent £300, which is more than a set.

Cooke Anamorphic/i is starker still. The 135mm T2.3 single is £340. The 5-Way Set is £530, or £106 a lens. Two singles cost £680, so the set is cheaper than the pair by £150 and gives you three more lenses on top.

If the job is anamorphic and needs more than one focal length, there is no arithmetic under which singles win.

Why sets are priced that way

This is not charity, and it is worth knowing the reason so you can judge when it does not apply.

A set is one handover. The owner meets you once, checks one case back in once, and the lenses are gone from the shelf for the same dates whether you take two of them or eight. The marginal cost of the third lens in a case is close to nothing, so owners price the case rather than the glass.

There is a second reason, and it matters more on screen than the money does. A matched set is matched: same coating, same rendering, same close-focus behaviour, same front diameter for your matte box. Two primes hired from two listings can be a grade problem and a mechanical one. If you have ever lost twenty minutes on a shoot day because the second lens needed a different clamp-on, you have already paid the difference.

The case against the set is real but narrow. You carry more, you insure more, and the deposit figure on the listing is larger. On a one-lens day, a single prime is simply cheaper and you should take it.

What actually changes your total

The day rate is not the number you pay. Two things move it, and they move in opposite directions.

Weekly and monthly discounts. Of the 73 published listings, 72 carry a 15% weekly discount and a 30% monthly one. Weekly applies from seven days, monthly from twenty-eight, and the deeper one wins rather than the two stacking.

Picturental Protect. Every booking carries it, and on current listings it is 12% of the day rate. The detail people miss is that it is calculated on the full rate, not the discounted one, so it does not shrink when your weekly discount does.

That has a consequence worth stating plainly, because it is our own fee and you should be able to see it: the longer you hire, the higher the effective protection rate climbs against what you actually pay for the gear. On a short booking it is 12%. On a seven-day hire with the weekly discount applied it works out at about 14.1%. Over twenty-eight days with the monthly discount it is roughly 17.1%. The pound figure is fixed and predictable; the percentage is not, and it is better that you hear that here than find it at checkout.

A worked example

An ARRI ALEXA 35 kit at £985 and the Cooke S4/i 6-Way Set at £375. That is £1,360 a day of gear, and Protect at 12% is £163.20 a day.

Three days:

• Gear, 3 × £1,360 — £4,080
• No discount (under seven days)
• Picturental Protect, 3 × £163.20 — £489.60
• Total: £4,569.60

Seven days, where the discount appears:

• Gear before discount, 7 × £1,360 — £9,520
• Weekly discount at 15% — −£1,428
• Gear subtotal — £8,092
• Picturental Protect, 7 × £163.20 — £1,142.40
• Total: £9,234.40

The extra four days cost £4,664.80, against £4,569.60 for the first three. That is the discount doing real work, and it is the reason to check a week's total even on a job you think runs five days.

The deposit shown on a listing is a separate figure and is not added to this total. Deposits across the catalogue run from about nine to twenty-two times the day rate, so read the listing before you commit to high-end glass.
