How Picturental works: peer-to-peer film gear and crew hire, on demand
Rent professional kit from the people who own it, or match with gear and crew nearby in 60 seconds. Here is how it works, what it costs and how it keeps you safe.

A camera that is sitting in a bag is costing its owner money. A shoot that is waiting on a camera is costing everyone else. Picturental exists to close that gap: it is a UK peer-to-peer marketplace where filmmakers and photographers rent professional gear from the people who own it, and where you can find kit, or crew, close to where you are shooting.
This guide explains how it works, what it costs and how it keeps renting from a stranger safe.
What Picturental is
Picturental connects two groups of people. On one side are owners: working camera operators, photographers and production companies with cameras, lenses, lights and support kit that earn nothing on the days they are not being used. On the other side are renters: directors, DoPs, students, content teams and anyone who needs a particular piece of kit for a day, a weekend or a month.
Everything is built for film and photo work. The categories are the ones a production actually needs, from cinema cameras and anamorphic lenses to lighting, audio, drones, gimbals, tripods, monitors and studio kit. The search understands the way people talk about gear, so typing "a7s3" finds a Sony α7S III and "a35" finds an ALEXA 35.
Local pickup is free, and owners can offer shipping as well. Every listing shows where the kit lives on a map, and you can sort results by what is nearest to you.
Two ways to rent
Book ahead
For most jobs you know the dates in advance, so the standard booking works like a hire house without the counter.
- Find your kit. Browse by category, city, dates or price, or save a search and get told when something matching it is listed.
- Request your dates. Leave the owner a note about the job. Owners who switch on Instant Book skip the approval step entirely.
- Pay once it is approved. Nothing leaves your card until the owner says yes. If they decline, or do not reply within 48 hours, you pay nothing.
- Collect, shoot, return. Use the booking chat to arrange the handover.
- Review each other. Reviews only come from completed bookings, so a profile's rating reflects real rentals.
If your schedule moves, you can reschedule a confirmed booking within 24 hours of making it, for the same length and price, as long as the new dates are free. Cancel before the rental starts and you get a full refund, platform fee included.
Instant Match, the Uber-style option
Sometimes the job is today. A camera body fails on set, a second unit gets added at lunch, or a client wants one more setup. Instant Match is built for that moment.
You post what you need: the category, the item, your postcode, how long you need it and your budget. The five closest providers who are online within 30km get a live alert with a 60-second timer. The first one to accept gets the job, and a chat opens straight away so you can sort out the pickup.
Payment follows the Uber model. Your card is authorised when a provider accepts, and it is only charged once the kit has come back and the return is confirmed. If nobody accepts, you are not charged at all. At pickup, the provider takes a timestamped photo of the kit, which is when the rental clock starts.
On the other side, anyone with gear can tap Go online from the header on any page and start receiving nearby jobs. Declining a job costs nothing, and your normal listings stay in search either way.
Hiring crew as well as kit
Gear is only half of a shoot. Instant Match also takes crew requests, so a production can ask for a cinematographer, a camera operator, a gaffer or a sound recordist in exactly the same way it would ask for a lens: role, postcode, duration and budget, sent to crew who are online nearby.
For freelancers, that makes Picturental something closer to a jobs app. Go online when you are free, accept the work that suits you, and get paid through the platform when the job is done.
Crew profiles can carry film credits too. Members can link their credits, and Picturental checks them against public film databases, so a producer can see a person's real work before accepting them onto a job.
What it costs and what owners earn
Listing gear is free. When a booking is paid, Picturental keeps a 12% platform fee (minimum £1 a day), and the owner keeps the rest. That fee covers Picturental Protect, secure payments and dispute support, and Picturental pays the Stripe card processing fees rather than passing them on to owners.
Owners set their own daily rate and can add weekly and monthly discounts, so longer rentals stay attractive. On Instant Match jobs, the provider receives 85% of the agreed budget.
Payments and payouts run through Stripe, so card details never touch Picturental and money goes straight to the owner's own Stripe account.
How Picturental keeps strangers honest
Renting a £5,000 lens to someone you have never met needs more than good intentions. The safety features are the core of the product, not an add-on.
- Identity checks. Members verify their ID through Stripe Identity and Picturental's own verification. Any booking of £150 a day or more, or £400 in total, needs a verified ID before it can be requested, and owners can choose to accept verified renters only on any listing.
- Picturental Protect. Every booking includes damage protection, built into the platform fee, up to the cover limit the owner sets on the listing. No deposit is taken from renters. Protect is not an insurance policy, so owners of high-value kit should keep their own cover in place as well.
- Handover codes. At pickup and at return, the renter has a one-time code that the owner enters, so both sides have a clear record of when the kit changed hands. If a phone goes missing, either person can void an unused code and a fresh one is sent.
- Scam warnings. If a message in the chat looks like an attempt to move payment off the platform, such as a phone number, a bank transfer request or a "pay me in cash", Picturental shows a warning under it. Paying outside the platform removes every protection above.
- Real accountability. Accounts that break the rules can be suspended, and a suspended owner's listings disappear from search.
The details that make handovers easier
The best rental is the one nobody has to chase. A few features exist purely to take the friction out of meeting a stranger with expensive kit.
- Live journey sharing. On pickup day, the renter can tap "I'm on my way". The owner can follow how far away they are on a live map, and the booking chat shows when they have arrived.
- Reply times you can trust. Profiles show how quickly someone usually replies, measured from real conversations rather than a number people type in themselves.
- Know what is in the kit. Owners can list every item in a kit, print QR labels for them and scan them at handover, and renters can see exactly what they are getting before they book.
The Trusted member badge
Some members carry a pink Trusted badge. It is not something anyone can buy. To earn it, a member has to meet all six requirements: a verified ID, at least three film credits matched to their name, a linked social profile, at least five completed rentals, a near-perfect rating across their reviews, and a habit of replying within an hour.
For renters, it is a quick way to spot the owners who have proven themselves. For owners, it is a reason to keep standards high.
Who Picturental is for
- Freelance filmmakers and photographers who need a specific camera, lens or light for one job and do not want to buy it.
- Owners with idle kit who want it to earn on the days they are not shooting.
- Productions working to a tight schedule that need gear or crew close to set, today.
- Crew who want to pick up work nearby when their diary has a gap.
Getting started
You can browse the gear listed near you without an account. If you need something right now, post an Instant Match request. If you own kit, list it in about two minutes and set your own price. The How it works page covers each step in more detail, and the Help centre answers the practical questions.
Frequently asked questions
Is Picturental insurance?
No. Picturental Protect is damage protection included in the platform fee, up to the cover limit set on each listing. It is not an insurance policy, so owners of valuable kit should keep their own insurance as well. The Terms of Service set out exactly what is covered.
Do renters pay a deposit?
No deposit is taken from renters. Protection is built into the platform fee instead.
When is my card charged?
For a standard booking, you are charged when the owner approves your request. For Instant Match, your card is authorised when a provider accepts and charged once the return is confirmed.
Can I hire crew on Picturental?
Yes. Instant Match accepts crew requests, including cinematographers, camera operators, gaffers and sound recordists, and sends them to crew who are online near your location.
How much does it cost to list my gear?
Nothing. Picturental takes a 12% platform fee, with a minimum of £1 a day, only when a booking is paid.
Where does Picturental operate?
Picturental is a UK marketplace. Anyone in the UK can list gear or post a request, and pickup distances are shown in miles from where you are.
